What is the Endocrine System?

Glands produce hormones
Hormones allow the body to maintain homeostasis
Pineal and Pituitary Glands
Located in the brain
Glands cause and slow down sex and growth hormones
Controls sleep + characteristics
Hypothalamus
Located in the brain
Controls many other glands
Regulates metabolism and body temperature
Very important for homeostasis
Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands
Located in the center of the neck
Increases metabolism rate in the body
Maintains Calcium levels
Thymus
Located in lower neck/ chest
Mostly replaced by fat after puberty
Important in development of immune system
Adrenal Gland
Located above right and left kidney
Consists of cortex and medulla
Uses “stress hormone”
Taps into body’s energy during stressful events
Pancreas
Located in abdomen
Consists of exocrine and endocrine pancreas
Endocrine pancreas controls glucose in body
Ovaries and Testes
Ovaries: found in females
Produce egg cells
Testes: found on males
Produce sperm cells
